Fusion lovers take heart, for there is finally an album where you’re likely to love each track! Often times on a fusion album, one likes a couple of songs, and then the music gets repetitive. In the Decade of Great Fusion, EMI presents an anthology of sorts. A lot of the big names in fusion have made their way into this compilation, featuring some of the more noteworthy fusion artists and their works over the past decade. From rhythm maestro Taufiq Qureshi (the other genius son of Ustad Alla Rakha) to in some ways his Bengali counterpart Bikram Ghosh; the album makes a strong case for the percussionist artist as well as listener. A relatively mellow interlude is seen in the form of the now established Rahul Sharma & Richard Clayderman duo. The fusion ante is then upped by the powerhouse statures of Nitin Sawhney and Trilok Gurtu. Its a generously packed album that excites, enthralls, and makes the listener exult. While several fusion bigs have found place on the compilation, one does sense the conspicuous absence of some game-changing fusion artists like Karsh Kale and the Midival Punditz. In fact, I’m being polite. These are rather glaring omissions. That said, Decade of Great Fusion does make a compelling case for Fusion’s cause. Suffice it to say that there were too many to pack in to just the one album. Go out and grab a copy, and pray that there’s soon, a part II
