What is a blog?

A blog was initially created as a digitial online diary (internet-based) where people would record their daily activities, their feelings and share the same with the people they knew.  So the early adopters used it as a place to record their thoughts before they hit the bed.

Now blogs have come a long from that and now are used to break news (like Trak.in, Watblog, Medianama, Techcrunch, Engadget), educate (Problogger, JohnChow, CopyBlogger),  review products/ services/ movies (tonnes of sites!), record travel experiences (Zoomtra, Tripadvisor) and more. What used to be one-way communication like a news article (bbcnews.com) or information piece like an article (ezinearticles.com), is now two-way (or multi-way), where the readers are part of the discussion.

Initially blogs were thought to record only textual content, and now adding photos, videos, widgets (just some pieces of code that perform a function like take a poll, play animation)  is common place. There are lots of things people do with blogs including seeking comments and creating websites (like corporate website, ecommerce website).

It has in a way, levelled the playing ground where we are no more just the consumers of information but also can have our ears to the ground and be originators of news and information. We can create a community that shares a common interest or shares a common concern while at the same time there can be a debate or exchange of thoughts from people with differing view points spread across geographies and time zones.

So that is a basic introduction to blogging. In the same spirit of thought exchange, please share with us what uses you put your blog to and any other comments/ feedback.
