5 Tips For A Healthy Holiday Season

Are you a friend of your body or a foe? If you don’t want to end 2009 and start 2010 on the wrong note, then simply do the right things :-)

Eat Salads And Fruits, And Then Eat Anything!

Remember – The human body is more adept at digesting and extracting nutrients from vegetables and fruits compared to meat products. So tuck in the greens and free yourself of guilt as you dig in the fork.

Drink Non-Alcoholic Beer!

Bah! That’s not beer! Hell, it doesn’t take like beer and I don’t get drunk. So, why should I drink this stuff?

True. Non-alcoholic beer doesn’t taste like beer, but at the same time it doesn’t add to your calorie count like regular beer. You can feel like a man (or woman) with a beer glass in hand, at the same time you can be kind to your body by avoiding the alcohol. The absence of the ‘kick’ due to the zero percent alcohol also means that your brain will be fresh and can think and manage the body better, and not over-eat like when one is drunk. So you kill the beer calories and over-eating in one go. Hurray!

Don’t Deep Fry Your Food!

Well, if you counter that with “I eat deep fried stuff occasionally” (and you are not alone), and the Christmas and New Year happens could be one such occasion. If nothing else, don’t use already heated oil as re-heating it again turns to trans-fat which is very harmful – read more here.

Eat The Desert First

You got to be stupid, you say. Researcher’s have found that sweets eaten at the end of the meal, on a full stomach, takes longer to digest and thus the advice. I wonder what will happen if you eat the desert first – will you skip that appetizer (deep fried?), and reduce food in-take? Hmm… a definite possibility and should serve you well on both counts.

Get Out Of Your House And Hang-out With Friends

Getting out of the house during holiday season is not something many of us do, instead we tend to become couch potatoes or hit the bed. So the holiday season ends up being a treat for the tongue to the detriment of the rest of the body. So why not relieve that work stress by hanging out with friends and family? What about that movie that you wanted to watch? How about meeting up with friends for old times’ sake and renewing those teenage bonds and at the same time getting some much deserved break from routine?

When we want to relax and have fun let’s not punish the body by stuffing it with alcohol or unhealthy foods. Instead give it lots of fresh air, some walk or exercise – that way your body is all rejuvenated and ready to take on the world in 2010.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all.
