Can Staying Healthy Help The Environment?

Many of us think that to help the environment one needs to use less paper or electricity or recycle stuff. Today as I was eating my breakfast a thought came to my head – can I help the environment by being healthy?

Well, let me admit that I am not a very healthy person, though I have my bouts of health consciousness! In the last couple of days, I have started to eat more salads and fruits and less rice or fried stuff. May be that’s why my brain is thinking about health stuff.

Here are some of my thoughts on how I can be healthy and that could lead to environmental friendliness.

  • We have heard a hundred times that good nutrition rich food like fruits, salads, and whole grain products are a great way to start your day. If I eat this healthy meal then I would

-  Not feel full or have a bulging belly

-  Not have oily or fatty foods that clog my arteries and lead to blood pressure, hyper tension, and in the long run may be heart attacks.

-  I would avoid eating spicy food which affects your stomach, liver etc.

-  Since I would avoid sugary and oily foods I would have fewer skin problems like pimples, dandruff etc.

-  Since I eat healthy, my concentration, memory, energy levels etc., will be high. As a result, I would need less medication to fight ill effects of unhealthy food habits which also saves me time and money for doctor visits and purchasing medication, health insurance etc.

  • Let me just touch on the food from another angle. When I eat healthy foods in proper proportion, I will not put on much weight.

-  So I would need less cloth to cover me. That way, less cotton is used.

-  My cloth sizes will not change frequently (because I am not growing  sideways!) and my cloth sizes will be available in most places. So I don’t have to go shopping often which saves fuel and also money!

-  I will feel less hot in any weather (because I would have less fat), so that much less electricity I will need to power the fan or air conditioner.

-  Less water and soap are required to take bath (smaller body).

-  Less water, soap, electricity required to wash and iron your clothes (because they are smaller in size as well)

  • I could drink more water, fresh fruit juices and lassi compared to coffee, tea, alcohol etc. Due to these healthy choices I would be healthy, but additional benefits include

-   Less coffee/ tea cultivation will be required

-   Less land and water used due to reduced agricultural activity

-   Less alcohol manufacturing

-   Less pet bottles or cans used for packaging them

-   Less trees cut to make way for pet bottles or cans manufacturing plants

When I see it in the above light I think staying healthy is a good motivation to being good to oneself and the environment. Do you think my above thinking makes sense? What other benefits of staying healthy do you think can help the environment?

There are many ways to stay healthy and certainly no shortage of ideas when it comes to health and fitness. If you are walking the path and lead a healthy life, you must keep the habits you must first route initially. His health will continue to improve and so will improve the quality of life in more ways than one.

  2. We all hate it when the cold days come. We feel more uncomfortable and our daily routine is often negatively affected. The harsher environment can have a negative effect on all the organs of the body and what is worse the risk of catching a cold or the flu is substantially increased.
