While traditional festivals are a part of life, it’s the unusual traditions and celebrations that excite me. I spotted the Reuters news of the annual monkey buffet festival in Thailand that concluded in November this year and this set me thinking. Why would people indulge in something unusual? Is it to add excitement to the otherwise boring life? Do they have some meaning and values attached to them?
I set out hunting for information on some unusual festivities around the world and here are three I would like to share with you.

Annual monkey buffet festival in Thailand

The annual Monkey Buffet Festival at Pra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lopburi Province, Thailand is held in November every year. Over 2000 monkeys have a blast indulging in a lavish buffet of more than three thousand kg of fruits, vegetables and goodies prepared by over twenty chefs of top hotels. While some locals say that this festival is a way of thanking Hanuman for helping Rama conquer Ravana while others believe that feeding monkeys brings luck, fortune and prosperity. In that case, why not attract more prosperity by feeding them every day? So, how lavish is the buffet? Check out the video below.

Baby Jumping Festival

If feeding monkeys does not amuse you, head over to the Baby Jumping Festival held every December at Castillo de Murcia in Spain? At this festival, dressed up infants are laid side by side on the ground while men dressed up as devils jump over them. The idea is to cleanse them selves of all their sins! Hmm, if jumping over innocent kids can cleanse the soul, can Kasab walk over guilt free if he indulges in this activity?  Anyways, see if you can do this act after watching the video.

World Wife Carrying Championship

Now, how about pleasing your wife by taking part in the World Wife Carrying Championship in Finland? Men compete with each other as they strap their wives on their backs and run over an obstacle course to finish first. Now, if you thought you could get away with your size-zero partner, think again. According to the rules, the woman must weigh a minimum of 49 kg to be eligible for the race. Can there be a better way to prove your love? Watch macho men in action in the video.
